Strategic change for a more just and peaceful world

We're here to help you make a difference in the world by creating the internal change that will strengthen your governance, improve your programming, build stronger relationships with your constituencies, or boost your revenues. We can help you with Board development and training, organizational development and management consulting, strategic planning, group facilitation, program development, organizational communications or fundraising.

Our clients are secular and progressive organizations working to create change that benefits a broad social spectrum of their community. They include organizations working on conservation and the environment, on public education and human services, on community development, housing and advocacy, and the arts and human services. They range from grassroots groups working in a single neighborhood to international organizations working across dozens of countries.View our client list

We approach each new project as a partnership to which we both bring essential information and skills. We help you set and meet your goals, but the vision and the knowledge of your community comes from you.

Good partnerships rely on effective conversations. Sometimes, the conversations we create stay inside your organization, leading to more effective partnerships among staff, boards and volunteers. Most often, however, we encourage and help organizations to extend their dialogue about purpose and goal to new audiences of funders, supporters and constituents.

As consultants, we combine objectivity and fresh perspectives with inside knowledge of how nonprofits build programs, generate revenues and manage change.

For Gayle, nonprofits are a promise to our communities, a societal commitment, to create a better life full of hope, beauty, promise and equal opportunity for all. Thus, each nonprofit has an obligation to deliver on its commitment. To do that, nonprofits need to be wise stewards of all of their resources - including their programs, their funding, their environment and the human beings they touch.

Gayle brings over 20 years of experience to her work with nonprofits - from her personal activism for peace, disarmament, environmental, human and civil rights, to her professional work as a consultant and former director of development and senior nonprofit manager. She is one of fewer than 100 individuals in the US who hold the advanced fundraising credential, ACFRE, issued by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Gayle has a M.S. in management from Antioch New England Graduate School and is a frequent trainer and writer on nonprofit management and fundraising.

Jonathan Howard believes that communication is an essential element of change for people and organizations. Communication begins by thinking about purpose, audience and message. Communications succeed when your audiences respond in ways that help your organization to achieve its mission.

Nonprofits have much to learn from private sector marketers about effective and efficient communication and much to teach the private sector about life's real bottom line.

Jon brings broad experience as a writer and project manager to your challenges. His work includes annual reports, brochures and other printed materials, web content, exhibits and video. Until 1994 he was Communications Coordinator at PLAN International's global headquarters, with responsibility for internal communications to a worldwide, multilingual staff and for providing video, photography and story materials from more than 30 program countries to fundraising affiliates in Europe, Asia and North America. In 1994, he founded Jon Howard Strategic Communications and in 1998, he joined Gayle in creating Cause & Effect, Inc. He has worked on assignments in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Japan, Turkey and other countries.
