The Institute for Conservation Leadership has just done small organizations a great service by releasing a study of the online fundraising experiences of 16 grassroots organizations. And a hearty thank you to those organizations that were willing to share their experiences in this report.
The study was compiled by consultant, author and trainer extraordinaire Andy Robinson (if you haven’t, you should check out Andy’s wonderful books through our mutual publisher Emerson & Church ).
Andy’s title cues us up for what’s inside: “Reality Check: How Grassroots Environmental Organizations are (or are not) raising money online.”
Some of the lessons learned by small organizations:
- “Personal contact and relationship-building trumps everything – and will become more valuable because fewer people will be doing it.”
- “Websites are still essential for effective fundraising.”
- “Social networks like Facebook remain a lower -tier for fundraising strategy – at least for now.”
- “Many online strategies won’t pay off for awhile, but try them anyway as time and money are available.”
One particularly interesting finding came from the Ohio Environmental Council. While most of their membership giving came offline, those donors who had email and received ongoing contact through a robust online program gave twice as much annually as their no-email counterparts.

Thank you to Heather Mansfield and all the folks at Change.org for getting Latino Dollars for Scholars Foundation of Rhode Island set up with one of their free accounts.
I set up my own fundraising page as it’s my birthday goal to raise $5,500 (I turn 55 next Monday) for college scholarships for deserving Latino students in Rhode Island.
It took a little extra time as LADO is an affiliate of Scholarship America but has its own EIN (but under Scholarship America). I used the wrong EIN for LADO initially (I’m on the Advisory Board and its been my promise to set this up before the end of the year). But Heather kept right at it.
Every organization can start fundraising immediately online through Change.org. It really is pretty simple to set up. I took the free webinar with Heather and she not only explained their site, but shared lots of incredibly valuable insights about fundraising online. Thanks Heather.
I’ll keep you posted on my fundraising… I’ve only mentioned the site on my Facebook page. I still need to send to my friends and colleagues. But we’ve got $150 raised so far!.

I just stumbled onto Change.org. I’m sure my readers know more about this than I do, but they’ve got an online fundraising tool that allows your supporters to set up their own fundraising pages. Part of the service is free and there is also the paid premium package. I’m going to take the webinar on the 3rd, so I’ll have more to report then.
Right now, they are also running “Ideas for Change in America” which is recruiting ideas online to submit to the Obama administration on how we can improve just about every aspect of our lives. Thanks to colleague Don Griesmann for the heads up. Check it out.
